Land’s End to John O’Groats

After nearly 20 years in the Army I wanted to find a challenge that could be a fitting culmination of what has been a varied and enjoyable career. I’ve always fancied the notion of cycle touring so it made sense that I give Land’s End to John O’Groats a go, especially as it will give me the opportunity to simultaneously raise money for two life changing military charities that are very close to my heart.

So on the 27th of May I’ll set off from the famous signpost at Land’s End to tackle more than 1000 miles over 14 days. Whilst I haven’t finalised the route yet I will be taking in as many familiar places as possible. I’ll be sticking to the back roads and leapfrogging from Youth Hostel to Youth Hostel. I’m riding solo but I would absolutely welcome anyone who wants to join me on any part of the ride for any period of time. The route is outlined in the table on this page  – please contact me if you’d like to join the fun!

I’m raising money for the Royal Signals Benevolent Fund and the Gurkha Welfare Trust. The Just Giving links are at the top of this page – all sponsorship is most welcome!

The Royal Signals Benevolent Fund helps serving and retired members of the Royal Signals, especially at times of personal hardship or distress. Throughout my career as a Royal Signals officer I have committed a day’s pay every year to this invaluable charity. On a number of occasions I was a member of the board that considered individual cases; I feel very fortunate that I found myself in a position where I could help fellow signallers when they most needed it. I was also amazed at the huge difference even a modest sum of well-targeted money could make.

The Gurkha Welfare Trust raises money to pay vital pensions to ex-Gurkhas and their families who left the British Army before they became eligible for the normal Army pension. It also funds infrastructure projects, including schools and hydro-electric schemes that transform lives in rural Nepal. I became involved in the charity when I had the privilege of commanding a Gurkha Signal Squadron in 2012-13. I was fortunate enough to spend some time in eastern Nepal where I witnessed first hand the transformational difference that the Gurkha Welfare Trust makes.

My planned route is in the table below. If anyone that knows me would like to ride any of it with me, or if you would just like to give me an excuse to stop for a coffee as I pass by, then please get in touch and I’ll give you more details.
